The New Year that was Late

Because I’ve lived most of my life in Arizona, I have been privileged to be close to some of its history. I reported on national stories from Phoenix and Tucson, but the more vivid memories are from rural Arizona.

For instance, I was on hand the night that the new year–I think it was 1953–did not arrive at midnight, but was delayed until 2:15 a.m. on January 1.

There was a strong wind blowing out of the southwest that night, and I could tell you that the wind slowed the movement of time from east to west. What really transpired …

Rain in the Desert

As this year draws to a close, I need to remark about the weather we’ve been having lately.

Two weeks ago, I was on a Wickenburg Horsemen’s Association ride out in the desert between the rodeo grounds and Sophie’s Flat (off Blue Tank Road). The woman riding in front of me was from Colorado, a “winter visitor.” We got to talking. I make this observation because every year at this time, I wonder if I’ll be here one year from now. I began this indexing many years ago. Without it, I might take being here for granted, and I don’t want to do that.

Thank you, Jesus, for all the people and circumstances that make life so rich. Please give me the good sense to take advantage of the joy and wonder that is so abundant, especially on the eve of your birth.

With all honor and respect to those …

A Story about Perspective

Carrie Ward from Buckshot Babe’s shared this with me last week. I don’t think this story’s author would mind me spreading the word to wickenburg-az.com site visitors. And from all of us at wickenburg-az.com to all of you, have a happy holiday and best wishes for the coming new year! – Maria

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very …
