Site Redesign

After nearly two full years with our WordPress-based Web site and its original design, I decided to update WordPress and completely redesign the site. What you’re seeing right now is the new design, based on a WordPress theme by Nurudin Jauhari.

About the New Design

I chose this design because it makes it possible to show off photos of Wickenburg in the header area while offering a clean, easy-to-read format for content. The page design is wider and looks better on computer monitors set to 1024×768 or wider. But if your screen isn’t quite that wide, you won’t be punished. The navigation bar is on the left and ads are on the right, so you’ll always have access to navigation and content.

The new design is about 80% functional. Everything you see works; I still need to add back a few features — like the Calendar of Events and missing WebCam — and fine-tune a bunch of other navigation features. I’ll also be reintroducing Opinion Polls.

I’ve removed the discussion boards and classified ads. In all honesty, there’s no reason for them. Visitors can comment on just about any post on this site and I think that’s the best way to get discussions going. I know that some of the recent posts by Allan Hall and Dan Schwimmer have attracted quite a few comments!

I’ve also added a navigation feature that makes it easy to find posts by specific authors. Every author who has written for this site is listed. If you’ve got something to say to Wickenburg visitors and residents, here’s the place to do it. Use the Contact Us link to let me know what you want to write about and I’ll provide instructions for sending your articles and photos in. Or, if you’re computer savvy, why not just register for an account on this system and write your article using our online editor? It’ll appear as soon as it is reviewed and approved. You can find the Registration or login link at the bottom of the navigation column on the left side of the window.

More navigation features will be added as I find time over the coming weeks. My goal is to make it as easy as possible for visitors to find the information they want or need.

A Few Words of Thanks

I want to take a moment to thank a few of the site’s regular contributors for helping me get the new photos that appear in the window header and About Us box at the top of the navigation bar. Lee Pearson, Allan Hall, Michael Chilingerian, and Flying M Air have contributed a number of photos taken in and around the Wickenburg area. Lee and Allan were particularly helpful, delivering dozens of high-quality photos within 24 hours of my request. I could not have gotten the site up so quickly without their help.

Remember, this site exists because of the generous support of the people who donate funds to help cover hosting costs, as well as the authors who write the content you read here. These folks deserve all of the thanks and praise we can throw their way. Thanks!

More Work to Do

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be going through every single article on wickenburg-az.com and revising it to bring it up to date. I hope to add new photos and new information to many of our activities articles — some of which date all the way back to this site’s start in 1999!

If you see anything wrong with the site — for example, missing images, weird code instead of normal text, etc. — please use the Contact Us link at the top of the page to let me know about it. Please be sure to include the complete URL or name of the page you found the problem.

Stay tuned. I think you’ll like what’s coming to wickenburg-az.com.
