If you are specifically interested in seeing the Roy Rogers mine, there is (or used to be) an old trail that leads from the Monte Cristo Mine south toward the saddle of the mountain. This trail is passable for horses at least to the location of the Allen Rhyolite Deposit and I have hiked that far myself.

I cannot vouch for trail conditions beyond that point - a bit of exploration is probably necessary to determine whether the old trail can be reopened to the saddle.

As for the circumstances that led to closure of the route described in the article, I will only say this: The owners have every right to protect their land from abuse and vandalism. That they have done so is sad testimony. There is real history of Territorial Arizona is up there and the actions of a few mindless people have caused the rest of us to loose access.

Wow, what a shame! I was going to ask if this trail was passable on horseback, I guess it doesn't matter now..

A very interesting hike. Due to the amount of traffic and misuse of the patented acreage this area will be gated and locked to the public. Cut fences, trash dumping etc. marks the sad saga of some people spoiling the entire area for the majority. Access to BLM parcels will be thru the monte cristo side of the mountain. Yavapai County Sheriff's office will patrol the area as per their involvement in the Castle Hot Springs area. Please be considerate. Thank you.
