		<description>Allan, you are exactly right.  Back in the 1800s labor was the cheapest expense for a mine owner or a syndicate.  Because of that labor unions strenghen.  The irony of this situation is that it is going on right now in third world countries and Americans are the ones getting rich.

Hard rock miners could earn from $2.25 to $4.00 per day in Territorial Arizona if they were white (depending on which decade you study).  The majority of mine workers spoke no English and were were hired because they were cheaper than timber.
