I ran across this very old postcard of the Henry Wickenburg monument in the little triangle of land at the corner of North Frontier and North Tegner Streets.
I was struck at once about the obvious age of the photo. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes back to the year the monument was erected, 1941.
Henry Wickenburg Monument, circa 1940s.
The monument tells the story of Henry Wickenburg’s discovery of gold and the founding of the town. It’s a nice little history lesson for anyone interested in the town’s history. Myfavorite line from the monument:
Legend tells …

Site visitor Michael Birdsong, who currently lives in Colorado, lived in Wickenburg back in the 1970s. He entered the following comment for our Before and After coverage of Frick’s Indian Store:
I was amazed to see a picture of Frick’s Indian Store on your web site today. In the 1970’s my family owned “Custard’s Last Stand,” if ANYONE remembers that drive in restaurant, at 620 Whipple (now West Wickenburg Way, I guess). It was just a couple of doors down the road. Here’s another quiz for Darlene and other site visitors.
I found this old postcard of the Crestview Motel and I’m trying to identify it in today’s Wickenburg. At first, I thought it was the Log Wagon motel — the layout is the same — but the vents on the building on the left don’t match up with the vents on the existing building there and the sign area is rounded instead of squared off.
Crestview Motel, circa 1950s.
Of course, there is a chance that this property no longer exists.
Anyone have information about it? Please use the …

I’ve been gathering old photographs of Wickenburg for wickenburg-az.com‘s new Before and After section. I’ve found quite a few and will soon be putting them online, along with images from the same places today.
I ran across the following photograph yesterday. I couldn’t figure out where it was, although I thought it might be Anita’s on Valentine Street. I’m not sure when the photo is from, but I’d estimate sometime in the 1960s. Perhaps someone has more information and can enlighten us. (Use the Comments link below.)
Frick’s Indian Store in Wickenburg of the past.
I posted the …

You may have noticed that although most of the old wickenburg-az.com site has been moved to its new format, the content in the Photo Tours section is conspicuously missing. There are two reasons for that.
The first is that inserting photos in documents in the new Web site software is a bit tedious. I thought I’d experiment with a software plugin that’ll create photo “galleries” online by accessing photos stored in a database. The benefit of this is that I can add photos at any time and they’ll automatically appear on the appropriate page. This is a great way …
